Signs That Call for a Professional Inspection Soon
Other warning signs don’t demand an emergency call but do warrant a professional assessment before they become one.
Electrical panels generally last 25 to 40 years. More than half of Kentucky’s homes were built before 1980, which puts a significant portion of Northern Kentucky’s housing stock at or past that upper limit. A home built in the late 1970s or early 1980s with its original panel may show no dramatic symptoms and still be running on equipment that’s well past its reliable service window.
Two panel brands deserve immediate attention regardless of age. Federal Pacific Stab-Lok panels (identifiable by the name “Stab-Lok” on the panel door or by red-tipped breakers) have a documented pattern of failing to trip when a circuit overloads. Independent testing found failure rates above 50 percent in some conditions. These panels don’t just need inspection; replacement is widely recommended. Zinsco panels share a similar failure mode: breakers can fuse physically to the bus bar and become unable to trip at all, even under dangerous overload conditions.
Other signs that fall into the “schedule soon” category include double-tapped breakers (two wires connected to a single breaker slot designed for one), a panel with no room to add circuits, and any panel that uses fuses instead of breakers in a home with modern appliance loads.
When Your HVAC Upgrade Exposes a Panel Problem
This is the connection most homeowners don’t anticipate: replacing an aging air conditioner or adding a heat pump often reveals that the electrical panel can’t support the new equipment. Modern high-efficiency heat pumps and central AC systems draw significantly more amperage than the systems installed in the 1980s and 1990s. A panel that handled the original equipment for 30 years may simply not have the capacity for a current-generation replacement. Homes still on 100-amp service (the standard for decades) frequently can’t support a new heat pump or central AC system alongside the existing load from appliances, lighting, and other circuits.
